Position: HR Manager II –  Payroll, Benefits, & Staffing

Supervisor: General Operations Manager (Team Lead)

Work Location: Must reside in the Greater Seattle area by date of hire

Schedule: 37.5 hours a week. 70% work from home, 30% in person meetings, occasional evenings/weekends for community/recruitment events

Position type: full-time, exempt

Salary:  $80,300-$82,800 / year

Position Summary 

The HR Manager II has the important responsibilities of supporting our internal staff development through organizational relationship and approach to conflict. The General Operations team oversees people and culture work and you must have a values-aligned perspective on Human Resources and know how standard HR practices can be transformed to be more liberatory, anti-racist, and attentive to the whole person. . 

You would join a self-managing organization with deeply relational people who desire a knowledgeable and confident leader to support us in managing conflict with diligent care. Our team manages operational needs for our internal staff and works with our other programs to serve an additional 200+ employees within our operational support program (we are a major fiscal sponsor!).  The HR Manager II will work in close collaboration with the General Operations Manager and the HR Manager I to support the development and improvement of RVC’s systems and policies. 

About the General Operations team 

The General Operations team manages employee benefits, payroll, staff wellness, compliance, evaluation, and finances at RVC and supports the operations support services provided to our 18 fiscally sponsored community partners. . Our team is looking to challenge “traditional” ideas around HR and dismantle oppressive structures within our work to center the lives of those working within or in adjacent with the nonprofit sector. Essential Responsibilities

Human Resources (90%)

Payroll Lead

  • Oversee the bimonthly payroll process for all employees, keeping online platforms updated, ensuring payroll is run accurately and compliant with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Maintain and update payroll records, including salary adjustments, overtime, and other pay-related changes.
  • Address payroll inquiries, discrepancies, and resolve any payroll-related issues promptly.
  • Collaborate with Finance to ensure the accuracy of financial reporting and account reconciliations
  • Participate in the compensation committee that oversees our equitable pay salary structure

Benefits Lead 

  • Manage employee benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, sabbatical policies, and other employee benefits.
  • Lead open enrollment and assist with administration with benefits-related inquiries and changes
  • Stay updated on industry trends and regulations to make informed recommendations for benefits enhancements 

Recruitment Lead  

  • Implement and lead the RVC recruitment strategy based on organizational values and projected growth 
  •  Collaborate with team leads to understand their staffing needs and develop individualized recruitment plans
  • Oversee the full-cycle recruitment process, from job posting to selection and hiring, ensuring the attraction of qualified candidates
  • Collaborate with the communications team to create the social media and online component of recruitment
  • Conduct interviews, assess candidates, schedule interviews, and coordinate interview panels. Support team leads filtering candidates for open positions
  • Manage and update external recruitment resources and job boards

Onboarding Lead 

  • Develop and manage a comprehensive onboarding program to ensure new hires have a welcoming  and informative onboarding experience and quickly integrate into the organization
  • Regularly update and manage our onboarding materials, orientation guides, and training programs
  • Facilitate onboarding sessions and regular check ins with new employees and their manager to meet onboarding goals
  • Seek and utilize feedback from new employees to continuously improve the onboarding process

General Operations Team Responsibilities 

  • Act as point person for your individual body of work
  • Be a supportive team member by helping when extra hands are needed and staying informed on team projects and priorities 
  • Take the lead on special projects to research and improve various aspects of RVC operations 
  • Maintain individual and organizational integrity by protecting confidential information, and preserving database security and intellectual property.

Organizational Operations (10%)

These are organization-wide responsibilities. All staff hold the following responsibilities:

  • Submit and track program expenses based on RVC protocol. 
  • Collaborate with staff in making key strategic decisions affecting RVC’s future
  • Engage in deep professional development
  • Participate in staff meetings, attend community events, and otherwise contribute to strengthening the deep roots within our community, both internally and externally

Who You Are / What We’re Looking For

You are passionate about creating and leading systems and processes that help everyday HR administration run smoothly and effectively. You can build a recruitment and retention culture  that brings in people who align with RVC mission and values. You have attention to details and great communication skills to teach staff about benefits and lead our payroll processing. You don’t shy away from tough conversation and new ideas. You have skills in exchanging ideas and trying new things to keep our employees confident in their choice to be a part of RVC.

Qualities that we’re looking for to succeed in this role: 

  • Lived experience as a Black, Indigenous, and/or person of color (BIPOC) and/or active member of a highly diverse community 
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of direct paid or non paid labor in any or a combination of: nonprofit operations, general operations, employee training and development, human resources, recruitment, and/or closely related work
  • Understanding of fiscal sponsorship models

  • Ability to clearly communicate work boundaries, expectations, and deliverables

Salary Structure

This is a full-time, exempt position, working 37.5 hours per week, with a salary range of $80,3000-$82,800 a year. The final salary offer will be dependent on experience and levels of responsibility within the organization. We believe in work-life balance and are committed to keeping the workload in alignment with the true hours worked. Due to the nature of our equitable salary structure, we do not negotiate final salary offers.

Our Hiring Process & Timeline:

We will review applications on a rolling basis until the position is filled.  The priority deadline is January 29, 2024 and the target start date is February 19, 2024. Candidates should expect a phone interview, 2 rounds of zoom or in-person interviews, and opportunities to showcase knowledge that is relevant to this role through interactive activities and written samples.

Work Environment:

RVC operates on a standard office schedule of Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. We offer flexibility for commutes to meetings and family scheduling, but generally expect staff to be online and working during these times and to keep an updated calendar.

We are a hybrid work organization which means that staff have the option to work from home or the office on a regular basis. For this specific role, you can expect to work about 30%  in person monthly to complete your job duties, which includes onboarding and recruitment events. The office is a drop in space in South Seattle with open work stations and quiet spaces that can be booked in advance for solo work or small group meetings. Evenings/weekends may be required to attend more community events for recruitment needs.
